In a universe of 8 BT21 characters, Tata is the one that stops people in their tracks. A heart-shaped alien from Planet BT — not an animal, not a robot, not anything with a conventional name — Tata is the most visually and conceptually original character in the entire LINE Friends BT21 collection. This is the complete guide.
Who Created Tata?
Tata was designed by V (Kim Taehyung) of BTS during the 2017 BT21 collaborative project with LINE Friends. Where every other member gravitated toward animals or recognizable creature types, V went in a completely different direction: an alien with a body shaped like a heart, from a planet called Planet BT, with an origin story that predates his arrival on Earth.
V's creative brief for the character was reportedly simple: design something no one has ever seen before. He succeeded. Tata is the only BT21 character that cannot be described by reference to any existing category. It is not an animal. It is not a robot. It is Tata — and that is its own category.
Tata's Design: What Makes It Unique
The Tata BT21 design is built around a set of deliberate visual choices that make it immediately distinguishable:
- Body shape: A perfect heart — wide at the top, curving to a point at the bottom. This is the most unusual base form of any BT21 character and the primary reason Tata stands out in a lineup.
- Color: A combination of red and deep purple — vivid, warm, and unmistakable. The color palette is controlled precisely by LINE Friends across all official products.
- Expression: Large eyes with a mischievous, curious quality — always looking like Tata is about to discover or scheme something. The expression is warmer than Cooky's focused look, but with an unpredictable edge.
- No arms in traditional sense: Tata moves without the standard arm-body structure of most plush characters, which contributes to its alien quality.
On counterfeit Tata plush toys, the heart-body shape is the hardest element to reproduce accurately. Fakes frequently have a body that reads as vaguely round rather than heart-shaped, lose the proportional width at the top, and use incorrect red-purple coloring. The eyes are also frequently wrong — losing the mischievous quality in favor of a generic friendly expression.
Tata's Story in the BT21 Universe
In BT21 lore, Tata is an alien prince from Planet BT who traveled to Earth following a curious energy signal. On Earth, Tata discovered the other BT21 characters, connected with Van (the guardian), and became part of the BT21 family. Tata is described as curious, playful, a little mischievous, and deeply invested in the connections it makes — qualities that directly mirror V's reputation within BTS as the most creatively unpredictable and emotionally expressive member.
Official Tata BT21 Plush Sizes
All Tata plush toys in the following sizes are official LINE Friends merchandise:
- Tata Baby Plush (10–15 cm) — the heart shape is especially charming at small scale. Fits in a bag or jacket pocket; a subtle but distinctive daily carry for V fans.
- Tata Standard Plush (20–25 cm) — the definitive Tata experience. At this size, the heart-body proportions are fully visible and the embroidered face expression reads clearly. The most gifted size for V fans.
- Tata Jumbo Plush (40–60 cm) — an imposing, room-commanding presence. At jumbo scale, the heart silhouette becomes a true centerpiece. A bold choice for V fans who want their collection to make a statement.
- Tata Keychain (7–10 cm) — the heart shape translates beautifully to keychain format — recognizable even at minimal scale.
Tata Among Collectors
Among serious BT21 collectors, Tata holds a special status as the most visually distinctive character. A complete BT21 collection without Tata is immediately noticeable — the heart silhouette creates a gap in the lineup that no other character can fill. V fans in particular tend to make Tata the centerpiece of their display rather than a supporting piece.
The Tata Standard plush also photographs unusually well due to the strong shape and color contrast. It is among the most shared BT21 plush toys on ARMY social media — which contributes to its discoverability and demand.
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of animal is Tata BT21?
Tata is not an animal — it is an alien from Planet BT, designed by V of BTS. The heart-shaped body is the character's defining visual element, and the design intentionally avoids any recognizable animal category.
Why is V's BT21 character heart-shaped?
V chose the heart shape as the foundation of Tata's design as a deliberate expression of creativity — a refusal to design something conventional. The heart form also connects to themes of love, connection, and warmth that are central to Tata's character personality in the BT21 universe.
Is Tata the rarest BT21 plush?
Tata is widely available in the standard LINE Friends catalog. Certain limited colorways or special edition releases may be harder to find, but the core Tata plush — the red-purple heart-shaped alien — is part of the permanent BT21 collection.
Where can I buy an official Tata BT21 stuffed animal in Europe?
