What is BT21? Origins, Characters, and Universe

BT21 · Updated August 2026

BT21 is the line of eight characters created in 2017 by the members of BTS in collaboration with LINE Friends. Each member designed their own mascot — Cooky (Jungkook), Tata (V), Chimmy (Jimin), Koya (RM), RJ (Jin), Shooky (Suga), Mang (J-Hope) — with the addition of Van, a guardian robot created by LINE Friends to watch over the other seven. The name BT21 is a portmanteau of BTS and the 21st century. Derivative products — plush toys, keychains, accessories — are all published under license from LINE Friends, the only brand authorized to produce authentic BT21 merchandise.

The Origin of BT21 — Collaborative Creation and a Space Universe

The project emerged from a documented process starting in 2017: each BTS member worked on their character — personality trait, color, morphology — before integrating them into a common space-themed universe, where the characters first arrive on Earth. The launch coincided with BTS's international rise in Western markets, immediately transforming BT21 into a global intellectual property. Available formats — Baby (15 cm), Standard (25–30 cm), Jumbo, and keychains — are distributed through LINE Friends stores and their authorized licensees worldwide. Counterfeiting is rampant on low-cost platforms; the reliable distinction remains the LINE Friends branding and the embroidery quality of the originals.

BT21 in K-pop Culture — From a Merchandising Project to an Autonomous Universe

Ten years after its creation, BT21 functions largely outside the ARMY circle alone. The characters are adopted by a kawaii audience with no direct connection to BTS — Cooky and Chimmy are among the most sought-after official plush references in France. The value of the collection lies as much in the design as in the authenticity of the product — an unlicensed BT21 plush does not meet the original manufacturing standards. Our article Authentic or Counterfeit details the distinguishing criteria.

Why BT21 is Still Everywhere in 2026

LINE Friends keeps the BT21 universe active through regular collaborations. A collaboration with McDonald's is expected in Europe starting September 2026, in the form of Happy Meal toys — an event that systematically generates a wave of demand for official plush toys from an audience discovering the characters through the menu. For a collector who wants their character with certainty, the licensed Standard and Jumbo formats remain the only reliable option. See also: the 8 BT21 characters explained.
